SAY NO TO TOBACCO

What can you do?

1. Talk with individual store owners that you patronize and ask them to alter their method of tobacco sales, either by stopping the sale of tobacco entirely or covering their tobacco product displays and removing advertising.

The fewer exposures youth have to tobacco products and smoking behavior (the less it is part of their "normal" environment) the less likely they are to smoke. In addition, it is more difficult for smokers trying to quit to sustain their quit attempt when they are "cued" to smoke by advertisements and products at stores they frequent.

2. Support local agencies that have signed a policy encouraging tobacco retailers to reduce advertising...and ask more to join.

Many local health and human service organizations have signed a policy that they support reduction of tobacco advertising and ceasing the sale of tobacco in supermarkets and pharmacies.

See a list of local organizations that have signed a policy supporting the reduction of tobacco advertising and ceasing the sale of products in child friendly environments.

Please join us by adopting a "No Tobacco Sponsorship" policy within your agency or one that you work with. We are available to assist you in this effort and to answer any question you may have. Contact Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga.

We welcome your active participation in this project.

3. Join the growing movement to encourage additional retailers to protect children from tobacco use.

All across New York many individuals are working with supermarket chains in their communities, asking them to alter their method of tobacco sales, either by stopping the sale of tobacco entirely or covering their tobacco product displays and removing advertising.

Wegman's, Budweys, and DiCicco's have stopped selling ALL tobacco products.
Price Chopper has covered their tobacco products and displays NO tobacco advertising.

There is a statewide grassroots effort underway to encourage grocery stores, including Weis, Hannaford Supermarkets, and TOPS, to end all tobacco sales. Advocates are working to encourage retailers to stop selling cigarettes for three great reasons:

  • To help smokers quit
  • To keep kids from starting to smoke
  • To improve public image

Statewide Campaign to End Sale of Tobacco in Pharmacies

Pharmacies and tobacco don't mix. A store that sells products to promote and protect health should not sell a product that kills half of its long-term users.

Thank you to the Broome County Pharmacies that have chosen NOT to sell tobacco:

  • Clintwood Pharmacy
  • Corner Drug Store & Gift Shop
  • English Pharmacy
  • Medicine Shoppes, Inc.
  • The Pharmacy
